Description:
Created by long-time friend of Lindy Shannon and professional musician, Tari Tovsen of La Crosse, Wis., wrote and produced this "History of La Crosse Rock and Roll." He gives historical context nationally and cites the MGM movie "Blackboard Jungle" as a pivotal point in the beginning of rock and roll as a musical genre. That movie featured Bill Haley and The Comets' hit song "Rock Around the Clock: that was released in May 1955. Tovsen then discusses how the local airwaves censored rhythm and blues music despite the national success of these artists. The success of Elvis Presley in 1956 and his performances in La Crosse were locally very influential. Tovsen then talks about Lindy Shannon's role in the rock and roll scene in La Crosse and many of the bands that Shannon represented and promoted. Lastly, Tovsen described the 1992 Lindy Shannon reunion show that drew over 4,000 people.
Tari Tovsen was 13 years old when he saw Elvis Presley perform on the Jackie Gleason Stage Show on January 28, 1956, and also was in the audience when Elvis performed in La Crosse on May 14, 1956, at the Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium. Tovsen was inspired to pursue becoming a professional rock and roll musician at that moment. Tovsen went on to be a member of several of the Lindy promoted bands such as Dave Kennedy and the Ambassadors and the Shy Guys. He later formed his own bands starting in the 1970s.

Description:
[005-511] In this clip, disc jockey Lindy Shannon calls into WKBH radio (La Crosse, Wis.) from a telephone booth across from the Milwaukee Arena and Auditorium about his experience a few hours before at the Beatles concert there on Friday, September 4, 1964. The Beatles played roughly a 30-minute set at the concert and three other musical groups also performed.
Shannon was able to get tickets to the concert in the 18th row from the front of the stage through the Minneapolis Capital Records representative. The Milwaukee Capital Records representative and his wife invited Shannon and the Minneapolis rep to go backstage and try and meet the Beatles. It was futile so they returned to their seats in the auditorium. Shannon recounted the excitement in the city and the thousands of teenagers as well as the concert just hours after it was over. Milwaukee was one of only 13 U. S. cities on this tour, and the only time the Beatles played in Wisconsin. Shannon estimated that there were 13,000 in the auditorium that night and thousands more outside in the streets..
Lindy Shannon was a disc jockey, record store manager at Leitholds Music Store, local band promoter and agent as well as being a weekly music columnist. Shannon was active with area musicians from roughly the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. Shannon worked with Roger Gilbeck under the agency name Lin-Beck.

Bill Harnden was interviewed over the phone by 1490AM radio personality Rick Wilson circa 2020 as part of a series of long-time professional musicians who had an association with Lindy Shannon of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Shannon was a disc jockey, record store manager, local band promoter and agent as well as being a weekly music columnist. Shannon was active with area musicians from roughly the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. Shannon worked with Roger Gilbeck under the agency name Lin-Beck.
Bill Harnden, advertising sales manager for the La Crosse Tribune newspaper, organized six Lindy Shannon reunion shows and was planning for the seventh show (30th anniversary) for 2022 when this interview aired. Harnden handled the business and logistical end of the shows, while Tari Tovsen, performer, was the musical director. The reunion shows were held 1992, 1994, 1996, 2002, 2007 and 2012 and monies raised were used to establish music scholarships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Viterbo College..
While Harnden was not a performer nor was he acquainted with Shannon during the height of Shannon's influence in the area's music scene, Harnden had an appreciation for the history of the local music scene and appreciated all the Shannon did for area musicians and the two became friends..

Description:
Rita Ann (Held) Chandler, the youngest child of Valerius "Shorty" Held and Alnora "Ma Shorty" Held, recalls family life growing up in a bar near La Crosse, Wisconsin. Shorty's Bier Stube, also known as Shorty's Tavern on Irish Hill, served customers from 1952-1971. Shorty's tavern played a key roll in the history of area rock and roll bands by providing live music booked by Lindy Shannon, legendary La Crosse disc jockey, record store manager, music promoter and agent. On Sundays, there was no cover charge and bands came up to Shorty's to participate in the locally famous jam sessions, all overseen by Shannon. During nights when there was a band, the cover charge was $1. A devastating fire in March 1960 destroyed most of the family's possessions as well as the bar, but with help from family and friends, the bar was rebuilt. It was later added on to and remodeled.
