Description:
The theme of this project is to examine the environmental history of the
Mississippi River in the area surrounding Lock and Dam Number Six near
Trempealeau, Wisconsin. With oral histories as our main source, our goal
is to trace changes in the river environment after lock and dam construction
in the 1930s. After taking part in several oral history interviews and utilizing much
secondary source research, conclusions have been drawn as to what
aspects of the river have changed since construction, as well as possible changes or
problems that may occur in the future. Some of the topics to be covered are
changes in fishing, wildlife, vegetation, water quality and habitat. The causes of the
changes have also been examined, as has what the future and its environment may
hold.

Description:
The past few years, the increased prevalence of deformed frogs in the Wisconsin/
Minnesota area has caught the attention of scientists and environmentalists around the
country. The health of frogs, and other amphibians, in an environment can be used as an
indicator of the health of that environment. The objective of the project was to find out if
the Mississippi River Valley harbored deformed frogs, and if the number of cases identified
was unusually high. The project also looked to find out if Manodistomum syntomentera
might be one causative agent for frog deformities. Frog collections were made
at Goose Island County Park, (La Crosse Co), Van Loon Wildlife Area, (La Crosse Co),
and Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, (Trempealeau Co). No deformities were
identified in any of 12 green (Rana clamitans) or 35 leopard (R. pipiens) frogs from
Goose Island, eight green frogs and two leopard frogs from Van Loon and 44 leopard
frogs and 58 green frogs from Trempealeau. Three of 58 (5.17%) green frogs from
Trempealeau were deformed. Deformities included missing digits, extra digits, missing
extremities, and misshapen leg bones. No supernumerary limbed frogs were found. We
necropsied 76 frogs, ( 45 R. pipiens and 31 R. clamitans ) and obtained numerous parasites
from the frogs, including: Halipegus (Eustachian tubes), Haematoloechus (rectum),
Rhabdias (lungs), Ozwaldocruzia (intestine), Glypthelmins (intestine), Megalodiscus
(rectum), opalinids (rectum), and gorgoderids (urinary bladder). Blood smears have yet
to be stained. Metacercariae recovered include: Manodistomum (subdermal), neascus
(subdermal) diplostomula (muscles), heterophyid (unencysted along femurs), and echinostome
(kidney). These data indicate that M. syntomentera is not likely the causative
agent of deformities in R pipiens and R. clamitans.

Description:
The impact to the fishery of Navigation Pool No. 9 of the Mississippi River from impingement and entrainment processes by two Dairyland Power Cooperative power stations in Genoa, Wisconsin, was determined. Impingement samples were taken once each week for a 24 hour period from 8 August 1978 through 30 June 1980 at both plants. Sampling devices, comprised of galvanized hardware cloth, were used to strain screen wash water to determine impingement rates. Entrainment sampling was conducted once each week for a 24 hour period from 26 February 1979 through 10 September 1979 and 6 February 1980 through 30 June 1980. Entrainment rates were determined by straining water from tapped intake pipes with plankton nets. Impingement survival tests, stress tests, and ichthyoplankton surveys were also taken to further define the impact of entrainment and impingement. An estimated 8,390 (127.1 kg) and 54,349 (2915.7 kg) fish were impinged during this study at La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor. (LACBWR)and Genoa #3 (G-3), respectively. The two power stations collectively impinged representatives of 53 species and 19 families of fish. The most frequently impinged species of fish were bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens)., gizzard shad(Dorosoma cepedianum) and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Young-of-the-year fish density, behavioral responses of some species of fish and intake structure design were determined to be the most influential factors causing impingement at these plants. The impact to the Pool 9 fishery from impingement by these two power stations was judged insignificant. Greater than 11 x 106 larval fish were entrained by G-3 during this study. Freshwater drum and Morone sp. larvae were the most frequently entrained species of fish. Other larval fish taxa entrained were Dorosoma sp., Hiodon sp., Pomoxis sp., cyprinids and catostomids. The impact to the Pool 9 fishery from entrainment was probably insignificant with the possible exception of freshwater drum. Recommendations for modification of screen washing procedures and intake structures at the present plants were offered to the power company to reduce the impact of entrainment and impingement. Placement of intake structures in areas of lowest fish density was recommended to the power company for their future power plants.

Description:
A seven-month study of the phytoplankton populations and water quality of the La Crosse and Mississippi Rivers and the back water slough of the old Black River channel below navigation pool #7, hereafter referred to as the "Black" River, was initiated on May 19, 1971 and terminated on November 20, 1971. Nine sampling stations were chosen in such a manner as to monitor the different channels above and below their point of convergence. Phytoplankton samples were collected at 3 depths, while samples used in the determination of chemical parameters were obtained at the 2 m depth. Six major groups of algae were found in the study area. These were the Chrysophyceae, Pyrrophyta, Euglenophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta. The latter three made up the major portion of the phytoplankton, both in numbers and diversity. The "Black" and Mississippi Rivers were found to be similar with regard to phytoplankton composition. The chemical parameters of the two study areas were also similar, with the exception of total hardness. It was observed that the total hardness concentration was lower in the "Black" River than in the Mississippi River. The La Crosse River presented a seemingly unfavorable set of conditions for the maintenance of phytoplankton populations. The major organisms of this river were various species of Ulothrix. This was also the only genus to occur in bloom proportions in the La Crosse River. The La Crosse River, besides being distinct from the "Black" and Mississippi Rivers with regard to phytoplankton composition, was also distinct from the latter two on the basis of turbidity and settleable matter.

Vallisneria americana Michx. (wild celery) was studied to determine biomass, productivity, and the nutritive potential of all morphological structures. The study area was located in the southern portion of Navigation Pool No. 9 of the Upper Mississippi River. A 2.6 hectare (0.1 mi squared) stand of monotypic V. americana was selected for study. Sampling was done monthly or bi-monthly during the summer and autumn of 1980 and the spring and summer of 1981. The nutritive potential of V. americana was assessed from these samples by determining dry matter, neutral-detergent fiber, crude protein, ash, and caloric concentrations of each plant organ.

Description:
Small mammals were surveyed in a wet meadow habitat of the Upper Mississippi
River floodplain by live trapping in late July and August 1998. Two trapping grids
were established at Halfway Creek wet meadow area of the Upper Mississippi
River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, near Midway, WI. One grid of 25 traps
set one meter apart was placed in a section of meadow that was burned in May. The
other grid of 50 traps was established on an unburned section. The trapping was
conducted for a total of eight nights on the burned and 14 nights on the unburned
plots. Meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) were the most abundant species
captured on both the burned (35) and unburned (57) sites. Seven short-tailed shrews
(Blarina brevicauda) were captured, all at the unburned site. Meadow jumping
mice (Zapus hudsonius), a species previously not reported in La Crosse County,
were captured in both grids in very small numbers. Physical characteristics such as
sex, reproductive condition, and weight of individual animals were examined and
compared between plots.

Description:
The UW-La Crosse Historic Steamboat Photograph collection consists of over 40,000 photographic images of steamboats on the inland waterways of the United States, primarily the Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri rivers and their tributaries. The photos depict steamboats in every phase of their life span from construction to destruction and every aspect of their daily operations from the 1850s to the present. The photos show steamboats in all sort of settings on the water; going through a lock, at a city's waterfront or levee, tied up at shore as they went about their everyday business of hauling freight and passengers and towing barges and rafts. For some steamboats, especially the bigger excursion boats, there may be over a hundred photographs to view; for other boats, there might be only a single photo to document its existence. Besides steamboats, other types of images in the collection include steamboat captains, engineers, pilots, passengers and crews; city and town waterfronts; levees; locks and dams; and river-related activities such as fishing, swimming and clamming.
